The Charles de Gaulle is scheduled to depart on April 7 for the eastern Mediterranean, to conduct unspecified operations. On April 2, French President Emmanuel Macron stated publicly that it would be unrealistic to launch a military operation to force open the Strait of Hormuz, and that the only way to reopen the Strait was to engage in dialogue and cooperation with Iran. Macron is of course correct, but that begs the question: why has he sent this aircraft carrier into the eastern Mediterranean?
