Despite being a 65+ year old airframe, only 5 B-52s have crashed since 1991. Although over 70 have been lost due to operational crashes and accidents over its lifespan, recent losses have been rare. Most of the losses were from combat or early-era incidents.
3 FEB 1991: Tail 59-2593 crashed into the Indian Ocean during Desert Storm when the crew encountered electrical and engine problems in flight.
24 JUN 1994: Tail 61-0026 crashed at Fairchild AFB during practice for an airshow. It stalled during a "go-around."
21 JUL 2008: Tail 60-0053 crashed on a flyby mission for Guam's Liberation Day parade. Improper stabilizer trim setting.
19 MAY 2016: Tail 60-0047 overran the end of the runway during an aborted takeoff, crashed and burned at Anderson AFB, Guam. Reported cause was birds ingested into the four right-side engines.
Then yesterday's incident.
There are a lot of questions, understandably, about yesterday's horrific loss. Time will reveal the cause.
Praying for the friends and families of the dearly departed.
