“NO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER HAS THE POWER TO ACT AS PROSECUTOR, JUDGE, AND EXECUTIONER” The Nigerian Bar Association is disturbed by the viral video showing the extrajudicial killing of a suspect by police officers in Delta State, as well as the subsequent confirmation by the Police Public Relations Officer that those involved will be tried for murder. This is an arbitrary, unprovoked and misguided show of power by a law enforcement agent. Not only did the act clearly show that the policeman took the law into his hands but portrayed the Nigerian Police Force in a bad light. The sordid act once more put under the spotlight the unceasing allegations I that law policemen routinely violate the rights of criminal suspects and even innocent persons. The NBA unequivocally condemns this act. No officer of the law, regardless of rank or circumstance, has the right to act as prosecutor, judge, and executioner. The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is clear that every person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction. Regrettably, many law enforcement and executive functionaries fail to abide by the terms of the laws which set them up as well as regulate their actions, but this is not always the case. They continue to act in manner which must not be encouraged in all decent societies. Some of such actions are usually unconstitutional, illegal and unlawful infringement on the right of individualsIf such unlawful actions by the security agencies continue unchecked, fundamental rights of people may not amount to much in such a climate of impunity. No society should allow such action to go unpunished. The gravity of the offence captured in that video strikes at the very heart of our humanity, the rule of law, and the constitutional guarantees of the right to life and dignity of the human person. It is s worrisome that in this 21st century, a policeman will summarily execute an alleged robber in a devil-may-care attitude. More worrisome is the fact that the summary execution was carried out in full public glare in grave violation of laws regulating the treatment of a criminal suspect or alleged thief. While we commend the Police for condemning and arresting the main perpetrator, but this is not enough. The viral video clearly shows that other policemen aided or were involved in this heinous act. The investigation, arrest and prosecution process must extend to any other officer may have counselled aided or abetted the extra-judicial killing as they all will be jointly liable for the heinous act. We therefore call for the immediate prosecution and trial of all officers involved in this heinous act. Any attempt to shield, delay, or dilute accountability in this matter will further erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions and will be firmly resisted by the Bar. We demand that the prosecution be conducted with full transparency and urgency. The Nigerian people deserve to see that the law applies equally to all, including those entrusted with its enforcement. We hereby direct the Human Rights Committees of the NBA in Warri, Effurun and Udu in Delta State to continue to confront such matters as well as monitor the sequence of events to ensure that this matter is properly investigated and prosecuted. In furtherance of this, the NBA Human Rights Committee and Civil Liberties Committee are hereby directed to closely monitor allegations of violations of citizens rights in any other place, engage with relevant authorities, and take all necessary legal and institutional steps to ensure that justice is diligently pursued and ultimately served. We reiterate our strong deprecation of this unsavoury conduct. It must stop. We must rise to ensure this and similar recklessness acts, stop. The bad policemen in the Force must be shown the way out to avoid giving it a bad name.

Extrajudicial Killing in Effurun The extrajudicial killing of a young Nigerian Mr. Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, by a police officer, is not only barbaric but also a grave violation of the rule of law. Over time, human society has moved away from an era when lives could be taken without consequence. Through the evolution of civilisation, a fundamental principle has emerged: no one should be punished or deprived of life without due process and a fair determination of guilt. Such acts inflict unimaginable trauma on the bereaved family and deepen public anxiety in an already distressed society. Nigerians are already traumatised by recurring reports of brutal killings by terror organisations across the country, and incidents of this nature - especially when involving state actors - only worsen that psychological burden and erode public confidence in safety and security. In light of this, while the law must take its full course, I commend the prompt response of the police authorities so far and express confidence that they will pursue this matter to its logical conclusion. Such responsiveness is necessary to reassure the public that justice will not be compromised. I therefore urge the police and all security agencies to sustain this approach by acting with transparency and accountability. Furthermore, recruitment processes must be more rigorous, ensuring that only individuals of sound judgment and the right frame of mind are entrusted with firearms. In the final analysis, these measures can restore public trust and uphold justice - both of which are indispensable to building a new Nigeria that is possible. -PO

Same police man that asked me why my yansh was shaking even as I wore trousers, and he even had to touch my yansh also. There was a bit of hold-up a few years ago in 2023. I had to hop on a bike when him and his squad stopped the bike. He asked me to come down. He, in particular, hit me with a gun and dragged the bike man down, and asked me to enter their shuttle bus. As I was approaching the shuttle bus, he hit me again with his gun and said why was my yansh shaking. I couldn’t say anything. He hit me again with the same gun and said I should thank God it’s daytime, if not he would have wasted me. He said I must pay 50k. I asked for which crime. He said he will take me to the police station and they will deal with me if I don’t pay. I said okay, I prefer to go to the station. One boy in the bus said if I have money I should pay, if not they might rape me on the way. He asked another guy in mufti to follow me to a POS and withdraw, so I withdrew 50k and gave them. I will attach how I was dressed that day. It wasn’t even indecent. I cried and cried and told him Earth will deal with him. Most of these police are brutal. He was so bold in telling me I should thank God it was in a day time if not… #endpolicebrutality

EFCC's Troubling Revelation on Our Students. The worrisome statement by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that 6 out of every 10 Nigerian university students are involved in “419” is deeply troubling and must not be taken lightly. Nigeria already has a very limited number of students in higher institutions, estimated at 2 to 2.5 million. If indeed about 60% of them, roughly 1.4 million young people, are involved in fraud, then we are not just facing a crime issue; we are confronting a serious moral and systemic failure. The question we must ask ourselves is: what has brought us to this level? Who are the role models these students are looking up to?. What values are they learning from society? We must understand that young people become what they consistently see. When a system appears to reward wrongdoing, when integrity is not upheld, and when those in leadership are associated with allegations of forgery and dishonesty without consequence, it sends a dangerous message. It suggests that hard work does not matter, and that results, by any means, are acceptable. These points clearly point to a collapse of moral values. As Socrates rightly said, “An unexamined life is not worth living.” Nigeria must now examine itself. This is not about condemning our young people. It is about accepting that leadership sets the tone. If we do not demonstrate integrity at the top, we cannot expect it at the bottom. We must urgently rebuild our value system, enforce accountability without bias, and create an environment where honesty, hard work, and discipline are rewarded. A decaying Nation Crying for Leadership. What we have witnessed across our country in just the past 48 hours is not only tragic, it is utterly unacceptable and a damning indictment of our collective failure of leadership. From the reported killings in Katsina, Adamawa, Kaduna and Benue States, to the gruesome murder of an entire family in Plateau State, and the heartbreaking abduction of innocent children in Kogi State, one of the incidents involves children conveying their mother's dead body for burial. Nigeria is bleeding. We are fast becoming a nation where human life is treated as expendable, where citizens live in fear, and where the basic duty of government, to protect lives and property, is repeatedly neglected. 11 innocent Nigerians were killed in Katsina State. 7 more in Benue State. 23 in Adamawa State in just one day. An entire family was brutally murdered in Plateau State. 24 children were abducted from an orphanage in Kogi State, and 10 more children were taken in Kaduna State, all within 48 hours. These are not mere statistics; they are our fellow Nigerians, fathers, mothers, sons, daughters, whose lives have been brutally cut short or violently disrupted. This cannot continue. A nation cannot develop under the weight of such persistent insecurity and human tragedy. The normalisation of these horrors is itself a crisis. We must ask, with all sense of urgency and responsibility: where is the leadership? Where is the coordination, the competence, and the compassion required to confront this menace decisively? My heart goes out to all the grieving families across these states. I pray for divine comfort for those who have lost loved ones and for the safe and immediate return of all abducted children.
