"The Supreme Court's ruling is a stunning victory against secret transitioning of kids,” said NC Values Coalition Executive Director, Tami Fitzgerald. “It upholds one of the most fundamental rights guaranteed by our Constitution - the right of parents to oversee the upbringing and education of their children. This is a huge win for parents and children alike, because parents are the ones most likely to make decisions in the child's best interest, not the state or the school. North Carolina passed a law in 2023 that gave parents the right to be informed by schools if their child started the process of socially transitioning. The Court's opinion indicates its intent to rule against schools secretly gender transitioning kids without their parents’ consent. If there are any schools in North Carolina who are facilitating secret transitioning, they should stop immediately or risk a lawsuit like this one."

The state of Washington must not exclude parents from major decisions about their children. Our sister organization, the NC Values Institute, filed an amicus brief in International Partners For Ethical Care, Inc. vs. Ferguson. This case involves a Washington state law that allows state officials to provide so-called “gender-affirming treatments” to runaway children without their parents’ knowledge or consent. The brief argues that the Supreme Court should overturn a Ninth Circuit decision upholding the Washington state law because it violates fundamental constitutional rights by excluding parents from major decisions about their children, lacks due process protections, and infringes on free speech and religious liberty. The government cannot censor its employees’ private speech simply because it disagrees with the message. Our sister organization, the NC Values Institute, filed an amicus brief in Theis vs. Intermountain Education Service. This case involves a school social worker who was disciplined and lost his job after displaying three personal books in his office that officials claimed were offensive to transgender students because they advocated that one cannot change his or her biological sex. The brief argues that the Constitution protects the social worker’s rights to express his personal views on transgender ideology, even in a public school, and even though his views may be offensive to some students or teachers.
