@PeterHRatcliffe @carefulmeasure Nonsense. Govts formed under a winner-take-all system rely on the shift of a few votes in a handful of ridings. Under proportional representation, parties do not get seats unless they earn them. Over 80% of OECD countries use PR and top the measures of democracy and governance

Those happy Scandinavian countries have one important thing that keeps them so happy. Uncorrupted highly intelligent leadership that actually works to better the lives of everyone in their country. It’s the start and end of great government.

NEW: In Jan. 2023, Ontario enacted a plan to allow pharmacists to prescribe for common ailments. A few months later, the health minister met with the then-president of Shoppers. The two sides have different memories of why the meeting was held. #Onpoli globalnews.ca/news/11736938/…

Spain's renewables build-out has structurally decoupled its electricity prices from gas markets. Gas now sets the price in only 15% of hours, compared to 90% in Italy. Countries that invested early in clean power are far less exposed to fossil fuel price shocks.

@TasRobinso30055 @PeterHRatcliffe The problem is not the parliamentary system of govt. Countries with presidential systems generally have worse governance. Canada's problems start with its winner-take-all voting system.

@PeterHRatcliffe Yes that’s why the whole Westminster system needs to be thrown in the garbage and Canada needs a restart. Get rid of the corruption from the top down. Start at the PM and see how many are left. My guess is not many

@PeterHRatcliffe You do realize the GDP per capita of Sweden is lower than the state of Alabama which is the poorest state in the USA.

@PeterHRatcliffe You may be right, optimize resource wealth, tough laws on crime, tight immigration and strict drug laws. We have none of those, our Government is far from great Glad you agree

@carefulmeasure @PeterHRatcliffe Canada's governance wud be greatly improved if the right incentives were provided. We need a proportional voting system at every level of govt which accurately reflects the broadest range of citizens and ensures that govt is accountable to them.

See herein lies the problem with the Liberal government — they are saturated with corruption and cronyism. And they are able to get away with it due to the Parliament Act, and the fact that they’ve paid off Canadian mainstream media and pollsters. To many people benefit from being on the take to hold them to account. Take a honest look at the Carney/Brookfield travelling road show. How could anyone in their right mind be okay with this.

@PeterHRatcliffe And they are highly motivated to do that by a proportional voting system which only provides legislative seats that are matched by votes. fairvote.ca

Growing global adoption of electric vehicles helped avoid the consumption of 2.3 million barrels of oil per day last year. By 2030, avoided daily consumption could more than double to 5.25 million barrels. “Electric vehicles are increasingly cost-competitive with gasoline cars. Oil volatility means EVs are a common-sense choice for countries wishing to insulate themselves from future shocks.” Daan Walter, analyst at Ember.

Finland is the Happiest country in the World for the 9th year running. We also climbed up the world brand index from 7th to 5th. I am often asked why we do well in these rankings. I do not think there is a magic potion, but it helps to have a society which strives towards freedom, equality and justice. The basis of it all is a welfare society, a robust education system, a sense of security and a close attachment to nature. There is no such thing as a perfectly happy society, but providing some building blocks that give us a chance to live a meaningful life, to help others, will nudge us in the right direction during the journey of life.

As @acoyne writes in The Globe and Mail, minority governments often deliver more legitimate, negotiated outcomes. So why do we keep producing false majority governments with less than 40% of the vote? Proportional representation would make cooperation the norm.

Canada is currently planning to fail on climate change. A new report makes it clear - Canada does not envision meeting near-term or long-term climate targets. This is unacceptable. Ignoring the climate crisis cannot become government policy. theenergymix.com/breaking-fossi…
