We made a clear and firm decision based on our policy of maintaining neutrality. However, there were indications that military tensions were escalating.
As a result, we did not grant either of these requests. Some questioned why the Iranian vessels were not granted permission. If we had done so, it would have undermined our overall neutrality. The definite suspicion that the attack on one of the three Iranian ships that visited the country at the invitation of the Sri Lankan President was carried out with the President's secret approval will cause serious damage to the historic Iran-Sri Lankan relations.
