This is something I've realized, why God used to be very harsh and why He is merciful now. The harshness was to get us to understand how serious sin is to God. The mercy is to show us that He loves us and in spite of how serious sin is, He would give His life to save us. This has a twofold effect of creating issues for atheists. They will call God evil for killing evil people in the OT while in the same breath call God evil for allowing evil now. Both ages are required so no human has an excuse, because it shows very clearly that God could do exactly what those who criticize Him asks and they'd still not follow Him. This is further emphasized by the coming millennial age where Jesus will physically rule the world from Jerusalem and even the animals will be in harmony with mankind and most will live for the full 1000 years, dying at 100 would be seen as a curse (likely due to sin) and people will STILL choose rebellion. God is clearly showing us the hearts of those who are against Him and how even when He does what they say a just and righteous God would do be it punish evil, have mercy and let people make their own mistakes, show himself and make the world peaceful, Hell is a justified punishment due to the willing desire to be separate from Him in spite of doing what they claim He should.
