I praise Gerard Martin constantly because he’s genuinely performing well and i always want to give credit where it's due. His improvement, hard work, and ability to adapt deserve recognition. But that doesn’t change our bigger problem: we still desperately need a centre-back, ideally a left-footed one. Martin is growing into a strong CB, but in a perfect scenario, he would be a backup to a more experienced, top-level centre-back rather than the main solution. Even if you believe he should be the main solution you can't deny the fact that our squad lacks depth in this position, and no matter how well Martin plays, we can’t ignore that need.

Alessandro Bastoni is a far more polished, intelligent, composed, technically refined, physically dominant, faster, taller, and more experienced version of Gerard Martín. That’s the best way to describe it.

I love Josh Acheampong, but if we bring him in, it would likely be as a Koundé replacement at RB. He’d do well there, but he’s a top-level CB, and it would be a waste playing him at RB. Bring in Bastoni and Josh, and let him take the RCB role over time, that would be perfect.

I’d love to say this international break comes at the perfect time, because a lot of our key players look exhausted and really need rest. But the reality is, most of them won’t actually get that rest, they’ll still be playing with their national teams. Especially the Spanish players like Lamine and Pedri. We all know De La Fuente doesn’t believe in resting players, even in friendlies. The only one I’m actually happy for is Bernal. He’ll finally get some rest, and he really needs it. His minutes have increased a lot in a very short period of time, and recently he’s started to look a bit overused. I can’t really blame Flick given the lack of options, but it’s still worrying. That’s why I’m relieved Bernal will get this break, he needs it.
