@GHWTowler Public displays of bad temper are always unattractive. In a Prime Minister they are, frankly, unacceptable as well as undignified. Coming at a time when Starmer is under enormous pressure, the voters will notice & conclude he has lost the plot. It won’t stop the questions though.

@CatharineHoey @afneil @bbclysedoucet And Starmer still thinks we should not proscribe Iran's very own version of the SS as a terrorist organisation. What a deeply rotten, morally deficient individual our PM is. I, for one, am deeply ashamed he is our PM

To many of us, #Blackadder is part of every day parlance. Which phrases from the show do you use yourself and when you do you use them? Example: When someone offers me a cup of tea, I say: "Yes, immediately!" You get the idea. Will RT the best ones.

Some lawyers may make good politicians by being able to shed their legal persona and display an aptitude for discerning, shaping and reacting intelligently to the political and public mood. Keir Starmer, definitively, is not one of those lawyers.
Colin Wynter KC@QcWynter

As many predicted, it seems Starmer is going to go heavily legal & because he will face "trial" first, with Robbins in the dock next day, he has predicted Robbins' defence & given an unnamed lawyer the task of rebutting what Robbins is expected to say. All very unseemly; tawdry.

🔵 🧵 The Tory outrage over Peter Mandelson looks theatrical when you remember this: In February 2023 while they were still in government senior Conservatives, led by Michael Gove, attended a closed-door cross-party summit at Ditchley Park. It was chaired by Mandelson and attended by figures like Goldman Sachs MD 👉Olly Robbins 💥 The purpose? To discuss how to “remedy the failings of Brexit” quietly, and with business and institutional backing. So let’s be honest about what’s going on. Mandelson wasn’t suddenly “back”. He was already being brought back in across party lines. theguardian.com/politics/2023/…

@GHWTowler This feels as if it is inspired by our Barrister PM, maybe actually his work. It reads & feels like "Counsel's Opinion", the work of a member of the Bar. Sir Davos has been on the UK legislation website, one thinks. He is clinging on like a limpet. Only a crowbar will oust him.

Next, we will find that No 10 has salted Olly Robin's garden and stuffed a dead horse into his water supply.
Steven Swinford@Steven_Swinford

Sir Keir Starmer's war with Olly Robbins just went to a whole new level The government has tonight taken the pretty extraordinary step of publishing what appears to be* a new legal opinion on the legislation surrounding national security vetting Allies of Robbins have cited the Constitutional Reform and Governance Act, which states that ministers do not oversee the national security vetting system Robbins is using this as part of his argument for not informing Starmer that Mandelson had failed his initial security vetting. The process, they say, is 'rightly independent' - something ministers have also said in the Commons But the government appears to have commissioned new legal advice which states: 'No law stops civil servants sensibly flagging UK Security Vetting recommendations' The government appears to have commissioned an ad hoc legal opinion as ammunition for Starmer ahead of his appearance in the Commons tomorrow Allies of Robbins point out two things. 1) This appears to be new legal advice - it didn't exist when Mandelson was appointed 2) It doesn't demonstrate that Robbins *should* have informed Starmer. It is effectively passive They say that the government appears to be attempting to retrofit a legal opinion to make Starmer's argument against Robbins * I say appears to be as it doesn't seem to have been signed off by a government lawyer, but that's v much the suggestion I'm getting from inside Govt

Forget the speeches – read the numbers. HM Treasury confirms that in 2025 we sent £1.3 billion to Brussels under the Withdrawal Agreement, via two big EU invoices broken down into monthly payments and settled on time, in full. Since 2020, the total net transfer from the UK to the EU has reached roughly £25.7 billion, with the Treasury’s point estimate putting the final divorce bill at about £37.9 billion. Yet as Britain keeps paying, a senior Irish minister and Brussels insiders openly float the idea that we should pay even more into the EU budget for “closer ties” – effectively charging us an entry fee to enjoy a fraction of the influence we used to have. Starmer calls that “pragmatism”. Millions of people will look at a £1.3 billion annual bill for a club we left and call it what it is: being taken for a ride.

The greatest propaganda piece ever pulled off on the modern public: Convincing them that producing complete protein, every essential amino acid, every fat-soluble vitamin, bioavailable B12, iron, zinc, and the most nutrient-dense organ meat on earth, from nothing but sunlight, rainfall, indigestible grass and the byproducts of crops humans cannot eat anyway, is inefficient. Needs cancelling, in fact. The cow runs on weather. The pea protein isolate replacing her runs on hexane extraction, bacterial fermentation for synthetic B12, three continents of supply chain, and a plastic sleeve. All to approximate a fraction of what the cow was doing for free. Somebody decided to call the cow the inefficient one. With a straight face. Everyone nodded. That's where we are.

@zatzi @TerraOrBust The complete absence of any democratic mandate for these rules is one of the principal reasons I voted against the EEC in '75 & to leave the EU in 2016. That Starmer so obviously loathes the concept of 'democratic consent' is why we must rid ourselves of him as soon as possible.

Keir’s EU “reset” has always meant “rejoin by the back door”. 95% of British businesses do not do any trade with the EU but they will have to abide by rules set in Brussels with no say from our own elected representatives. Labour’s manifesto specifically ruled out rejoining the Single Market. But it would seem Starmer lied yet again. He is a stranger to the truth.
Joe Barnes@Barnes_Joe

Sir Keir Starmer is considering a move to align Britain with the EU’s Single Market for goods as the next stage of his Brexit ‘reset’. The move would lead to British firms having to follow hundreds of rules and regulations set in Brussels without a say. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2026/…

@QcWynter Starmer reminds me of so many Defendants in criminal trials. You start probing their version & they come up with a series of whoppers. Then they change the whoppers because they have forgotten the whoppers they told earlier. "But, just now you said X, now it's Y. How is that?"

Behold the utter smallness of Sir Keir Starmer. Scrambling around to save his leadership, he has decided to give his Euro-fanatic backbenchers something symbolic. Britain will automatically download EU rules in the fields of energy and food in return for… well, in return for nothing much beyond feel-good Europhile fluffiness. What is proposed is not that Britain and the EU recognise each other’s standards in certain areas. That is the normal way in which trade agreements happen and, indeed, the normal way in which the EU negotiates deals. Brussels, for example, has a mutual recognition agreement with New Zealand. Nor is it proposed that Britain and the EU should jointly agree in advance to certain standards on, say, animal welfare or food safety. No, what Starmer is offering is something quite different, something almost unprecedented among sovereign nations. What he proposes is write a blank cheque. Whatever standards the EU might adopt in future, Britain will automatically copy them. They might be ludicrously expensive. They might be inappropriate to our conditions. Whatever their content, we would have no option but to copy them. There would be no debate in Parliament, no vote in the House of Commons. Brussels would dictate, and Britain would scramble to obey. Starmer is not interested in practical solutions. His policy is wholly vibes-driven, designed to show how different he is from the awful Tories.

Kingdom of Hungary was literally a republic, so it's nothing weird about using the crown as aesthetic. An example of a crown depicted on the cover of a 17th century book that stresses that Hungary is a republic ("Republic and State of the Kingdom of Hungary").
