In 1992, we took a fleet of DC-6 aircraft and sprayed much of Vancouver with an organic pesticide...from a height of 300 ft. I was director of communications for the project. Here’s why transparency and credibility is critical in any crisis including #coronavirus.

@GenerallyLeMay By knowing the signs. Heat illness starts slow without people understanding they need help. Everyone needs AC but, if you don’t have it, you need to know who and when to call. It took a long time for ambulances to arrive due to high call volume. People waited too long.

If you are experiencing extreme heat, soak your sheets in cold or ice water and cover your naked body with them. Once the sheets feel a bit dry, do it again. Our doctors used this method in Vancouver hospitals to save lives when a heat dome killed 600+. Use for pets too. #climate

@BlueEightySix 😆 I already have three AC units. You clearly are not capable of understanding the context of the original post. You should spend less time posting and more time reading. Don’t worry. You’ll get it one day.

@Plan_Prep_Live You take yourself way too seriously. Window air conditioning costs a couple hundred bucks for one room in a house. Requires only the same common sense as having wood for a fireplace in the winter.

Heads up‼️ Hottest Ever?! It’s genuinely possible. No exaggeration to say that the severity of the #heatwave that the Eastern US is about to experience will be cruel and grueling for days! 100s of record highs, some neck and neck with all-time records, in the East Coast cities! And peak heat index numbers near 115. Lasting right into the weekend.

@scottdotnetdev @RazLikesRocks 😆 I have three AC units. A lot of people have AC as do most buildings, hospitals, offices, stores. Some of those that didn’t have AC died in our heat dome. 600+ people. Other methods needed while waiting for ambulances. Everyone needs AC.

@CraigGr27002535 It’s extreme, I agree. But the conditions warranted it. It provides rapid intervention to reduce body temperature before heading to the vet. People came home to dead and dying pets after a day at their air conditioned offices during our heat dome.

@simeyowen I’m so sorry to hear that, Leslie. AC would definitely have prevented his death. My paramedic son nearly became very ill as well. It can creep up without most being aware. He was surprised at how easily you can fall victim.

@Plan_Prep_Live My ex-husband was one of the 600 people killed in the heat dome. He lived in an older apartment building in Burnaby, no a/c, by the time he got to the hospital he was already in a coma.

@Tinybutfierce1 Canada doesn’t normally get heat domes but we have air conditioning in hospitals, shopping centres, office buildings and many homes. Many people never thought they would need one. Putting a pet into a fridge is for rapid intervention only for a short time before taking to vet.

Canada. Use iced sheets to deal with the heat....forget ever sleeping in said sheets......and while you're at it ...MAID your dog in the fridge. It's only merciful after all....
Nancy Argyle 🇨🇦@Plan_Prep_Live

Our hospitals are air conditioned. This method was used on people who were brought in by ambulance to rapidly stop hyperthermia. If using on most pets, focus your cooling efforts on the belly. Some put pets in fridges for a short time to stop hyperthermia before taking to vet.

@qw_jessie It is critical that electricity and water stays on! It measured 45 degrees Celsius in my hallway despite two air conditioners and fans. Glad you and the cats made it.

This is interesting, I wouldn’t have thought about that! The heat dome SUCKED. Extreme heat that’s trapped is no joke. Even with our portable AC blasting, our cats got nauseous from heat, we were still sweating. Luckily our apartment kept the water very cold…

@LeahDiscovers Not a typo. People, who worked in AC buildings (lots here), came home to find their pets either dead or dying in homes with no AC. Vets advised quick intervention by placing them in a fridge for a short time to bring down body temp then transport to vet.
