"They said Spain was alone when we recognized Palestine. Then others followed. We're not alone-we're the first. Those defending the indefensible will end up alone." ---Spain PM Pedro Sánchez.

Tomorrow I turn 43. I'm 930 days sober and halfway through my 2nd year as a student social worker. I also got offered a new role which I'm super excited about. The last 3 years have changed me in ways I never expected. Thank you to everyone who's walked beside me along the way ♥️

@MaiaDunphy I remember the first time I heard of this - a friend of my parents called their kid Kylie in the late 80s. We laughed for a week. The priest asked if they were sure at the christening 🤣🤣

So many people are named after celebrities these days. Our parents never did that. If they did, we’d know at least one Sigourney.

I signed the order establishing this new public holiday. It clearly states that it is both St Brigid's Day and Imbolc venerating both an Irish christian saint and our own ancient new year when we had our own gods and godesses (1/2)

In Ireland, 1 February marks the first day of spring and the celebration of Lá Fhéile Bríde, St Brigid’s Day. Watch as we honour the extraordinary contributions Irish women have made at home and around the world.

Hugh Gillanders - Aodh Mac Giolla Andreis
We remember on this day. Urantsetseg Tserendorj and her family. She was brutally attacked on her way home from work in Dublin on January 20th 2021 - she died two weeks later. She was a mother of two. We think of her husband, children and family over these days of the anniversary of her murder. Four years ago I attended an anniversary ceremony which was held in Harrington St Church. The congregation was overflowing with her own community and people who didn’t know her but joined in solidarity. The President Michael D Higgins made a surprise visit to meet the family.

@RuftynTufty @SisterKaff @AlisonMoyet They most certainly were not optional for the girl. It was up to her MALE relatives to decide if she could stay home/keep child/return home. If her father or brother objected it overruled her female relatives. Educate yourself about the reality.

@SisterKaff @AlisonMoyet Absolutely dreadful places but they were a choice not mandatory. Depended on family support; in the 60's, my Aunt was pregnant before married & no way would my Gran have sent her there.Yet a friend of mine got pregnant in the 90's & her Mam put her in a mother & baby home.

I can’t pretend not to know the struggles women faced & continue to. In my life time here some subjects were not open to us at school. I needed my father’s signature to open a bank account. In my ‘Hay Day’ my husband was responsible for my tax returns. Memories are so short.

@RuftynTufty @AlisonMoyet Irish Women couldn't get an honours degree in university until the late 70s: Were expected to resign from many jobs on marriage until 1973. Needed a male guarantor for loans inc mortgages until 73. Only had employment protection in 1977. Also - mother & baby homes.

@AlisonMoyet Janey! Same age group as you Alison. I took woodwork in school as well as H.E.,signed for my own bank account & never heard of any hubby doing tax returns for the missus (it'd never have gotten done if that was the case!). Things were obvs different in Ireland than the UK.

It’s worth taking a couple of minutes to read this extraodinary statement from Rebecca Good, the wife of murdered Renée Good. Not a word of anger or hate (which would be completely understandable), just pain, compassion and empathy. 💔💔

Statement from the Premier of Greenland 🇬🇱 6:55pm local time: “🇬🇱 We have been a close and loyal friend of the United States for generations. We have stood shoulder to shoulder in difficult times. We have taken responsibility for security in the North Atlantic — and not least for North America. That is what true friends do. Precisely for that reason, the current and repeated rhetoric coming from the United States is entirely unacceptable. When the President of the United States speaks of “needing Greenland” and links us to Venezuela and military intervention, it is not only wrong. It is disrespectful. Our country is not an object in great-power rhetoric. We are a people. A country. A democracy. That must be respected — especially by close and loyal friends. We are part of NATO, and we are fully aware of our country’s strategic location. We also understand that our security depends on good friends and strong alliances. In that context, a respectful and loyal relationship with the United States is very important. That has been the case for decades. But alliances are built on trust. And trust requires respect. Threats, pressure, and talk of annexation have no place between friends. That is not how one speaks to a people who have repeatedly demonstrated responsibility, stability, and loyalty. Enough is enough. No more pressure. No more insinuations. No more fantasies of annexation. We are open to dialogue. We are open to conversations. But they must take place through the proper channels and in full respect of international law. And the proper channels are not random and disrespectful posts on social media. Greenland is our home and our territory. And it will remain so. 🇬🇱”

I spent much of Christmas Eve & Day in Tallaght Hospital with my son. The only Irish people there were the patients. The staff are all absolute angels. The #IrelandisFull misfits and weirdos can once again go fuck themselves.
