@si_rubinstein @s8mb Molyneaux is much better for Alfred to Edgar. Campbell is good as a summary of the state of play in 1066, but even then must be taken with a liberal pinch of salt.

What are the best books about the development of the early English state? I’m thinking specifically of the Anglo-Saxon state under Alfred through Edgar, but also interested in the Norman state and Henry II.

@brunellus @AntigoneJournal Of course, careful use requires meticulous checks to ensure reasonable estimates of accuracy (and this often is neglected).

@brunellus @AntigoneJournal I think it depends on what you're looking for. I've seen papers where they've got up to 90% accuracy at identifying things like values of products traded. I'm not v interested in economic modelling, but I can see why others who are would find such data useful.

This is a genuinely interesting story. Huge amount of automated work, potentially saving hundreds of thousands of human hours. BUT: with an error rate of 10%, and with the precise reading of *every* word mattering in such an exercise, it is meaningless, and for manuscripts of authority worse than useless, without a human checking every single word. BUT: there simply aren't people, in 2026, with the expertise, the time, and the funding to check these 32,000 manuscripts at this level. Welcome to Digital Humanities Slop.

This young man has just taken Classics Mods, the 10-paper mid-course handwritten exams at Oxford spread over two weeks. Best wishes to him and the whole cohort. The exams are not for the faint-hearted. Nor is marking them…

2nd year undergraduate at @JesusOxford explains in fluent Latin that literature persisted through the ‘Dark’ Ages. “But in any case literature and other things didn’t disappear but continued…” “Sed, uticumque est, litterae et utria non perierunt sed perrexerunt…”

@DrMichaelBonner I don't think you are! I'm more of an Augustine man than an Aquinas one, but anyone who casts shade on the latter is likely less than half as smart as he was.

Trevor-Roper wrote that Aquinas was as obsolete as the mammoth and the Mastodon, and that only style could have saved him. Erasmus had style, but for some reason I suspect that Aquinas may be more widely read now than Erasmus, and more widely read now than in the mid-20th century, but I could be wrong...

This is silly, though Corpus was indeed founded as a home for the new learning and was the most Erasmian and humanist of the Colleges -- in opposition to Brasenose, a reactionary holdout of scholasticism. Incidentally, I have always been proud to associate myself with the latter.
Capel Lofft@CapelLofft

I am trawling the websites of Oxford Colleges for work-related purposes. Found this gem on Corpus Christi's website. You know what, I have my doubts that a college founded by a bishop which had Reginald Pole as one of its founding fellows was that 'progressive'. Just a thought

@ProfLRoach I think we might agree on the primacy of the working classes and the necessity of at least basic public welfare. But in Canada my politics revolve around an antipathy for the Liberal Party.

Imbeciles on Reddit have once again mistaken me for an academic. And is a doctorate in late-antique Iranian and early Islamic history really 'exactly what you'd expect' from a 'right wing content creator'?

@medievalist1 True scholars do their own indexing. Every time, I've caught at least one error I'd have otherwise missed.
