The change means millions of businesses using Square could soon begin accepting Bitcoin by default, rather than opting in manually. The rollout is part of Block’s broader push to integrate Bitcoin payments across its ecosystem, leveraging the Lightning Network for fast, low-cost transactions. Bill H7957, led by Woonsocket Democratic Rep. Stephen Casey, would preclude courts and government agencies from forcing someone to hand over a private key tied to these digital properties. “It’s more like your private property,” Casey said in a phone interview Monday about what the bill seeks to protect. “Somebody confiscates your cell phone and you have all your digital assets on there. Introduced by Ben Keathley (R-101), the bill was referred to the House Commerce Committee. HB 2080 would create a “Bitcoin Strategic Reserve Fund” inside the state treasury, with the State Treasurer serving as custodian. • The fund would grow primarily through gifts, grants, and donations — not taxpayer-funded purchases. • All Bitcoin must be held in cold storage for at least five years before any sale or transfer. • State and local agencies could accept crypto for taxes and fees, pending Department of Revenue approval. • The Treasurer must implement strict custody policies, audits, and biennial reporting. Ironically, if a crypto rewards ban went into law, it would make us more profitable since we payout large amounts in rewards to our customers holding USDC. But we don’t want this to happen, it’s better for customers to get rewards, and it’s better for the US to keep regulated stablecoins competitive on a global stage.
