I bought $250,000 worth of 1st Edition Jungle Tauros cards.
No, that’s not a typo.
That’s roughly 2,500 copies of the raging Wild Bull from the 1999 Jungle set—1st Edition stamped, pack-fresh where possible, graded gems prioritized, and stored in archival slabs like artifacts from the original WOTC era. An asset class that defined the early Pokémon frenzy and is now surging again through nostalgia, finite supply, and viral rediscovery.
Most people would call it insanity.
But let me explain the thesis.
Each raw near-mint copy averages about $5–10 today, with PSA 10s fetching $100–200. But over the past 25 years, top-tier vintage WOTC collectibles—especially authenticated 1st Edition cards—have crushed inflation, gold, and even the S&P in many cases, with returns exceeding 500–1000% on iconic pieces since the late '90s.
Meanwhile, Millennials and Gen Z are hitting peak nostalgia and disposable income—and diving back into the cards that defined their childhood Saturdays.
It’s only a matter of time before the 30th anniversary hype in 2026 turns “vintage paper nostalgia” into the ultimate alternative hedge.
So what happens when the last generation’s playground currency becomes this generation’s blue-chip relic?
Those who held the originals—the 1st Edition pioneers, the pristine-stamped masterpieces—will watch as supply evaporates and prices charge ahead. Just like Base Set holos or shadowless gems, except rarer in high grade and wildly undervalued today.
My $250,000 position, therefore, isn’t a “hoard.”
It’s an asymmetrical bet that culture cycles, memory monetizes, and true scarcity never fades.
Worst case? I’m long $250,000 of iconic cardboard history—a gallery of Kagemaru Himeno art, stamp lore, and pure '90s Pokémon psychology.
Best case? Prices triple (or more), grading populations tighten, or some mega-collector fund declares early Jungle uncommons the new sleeper assets, making 1st Edition Tauros finite, ferocious, and priceless to the nostalgic and speculative alike.
It’s not crypto. It’s not stocks.
It’s not even holographic foil.
It’s 2,500 charging tokens of the original Pokémon dream—
a hedge against reprints, fakes, and the fading of childhood wonder.
That’s deep value.
That’s the Tauros Standard.
Been pretty excited for this one to come in the mail! Our holy grail, PSA 10 first edition jungle Rapidash!
This brings out count too…!!
Total Rapidash count: 112
CGC submission is officially prepped and ready to go.
I’ll be sending 100 Neo Genesis 1st Edition Totodiles (58 No. 81 & 42 No. 80) to @CGCCards with the goal of documenting the grading process from start to finish, adding more graded Totodiles to the hobby, and sharing the experience with the community.
As part of this project, I’ll be doing a giveaway — one Totodile from each grade received (CGC 5, CGC 6, CGC 7, CGC 9, etc.).
This has been a long-term collecting goal of mine, and I’m excited to finally see it come together. 🐊👑
