Five months ago I started ALL CAPS. This morning, we had our first major project featured in the New York Times. nytimes.com/2022/12/07/nyr…

@Ghitelman Fad foods have definitely existed forever -- I'm talking about the NYC / other major city phenomenon of fad food blowing up, then a million copycats immediately rise up, then it's dead six months later. Think: Sushi burritos, poke bowls, elaborate donuts. Ramen even had a moment!

When did the Fad Food Era begin in New York City? Certainly before I moved here in 2010, but this constant churn of fad pop ups hasn't been the standard forever. Maybe early 2000s?

The first major Fad Food cycle I can remember was sparked by Magnolia cupcakes and it spawned the subsequent cupcake fad.

@cannalabs420 Elevate in the Adirondacks, Evergreen in Rochester, The Bakery in Cohoes (just outside Albany), Cannabis Realm in White Plains to name just a few! White Plains definitely qualifies for "downstate," but I'm assuming you mean "The City" -- perhaps an unfair assumption!

Likely true downstate. Upstate, where we been putting out dank nugs since the 70s, MSOs got a very strong foothold. Doesn't matter if they lose a few shops in the process, their presence is overpowering. Consumers will evolve & catch on. & those MSO backed shops will be left holding their dirty bags.

There is a few decent shops out there that still hold & respect traditional values. & They do care about their customers & community. These will survive, if they can endure. MSO backed - the writing is on the wall.
CannaLabs@cannalabs420

So I've been making my rounds & in NY, MSOs have most shops by the balls. They fully stock them with a large variety of garbage. Net 90. Shops are in trouble, now trapped & their hands are tied. MSOs own their ass. Bought & paid for.

If you have the infinite luxury of having enough money to live for a month without being put on the street, TAKE THE TIME to breathe, think, and brainstorm. Talk to colleagues who built their own ventures. YOU CAN DO IT. You want to build a newsroom? BUILD ONE.

"Then how do I make money?" Start by *controlling your own creative output*. Consider business models that could work for your situation. At a MINIMUM you've now got a home for your work that isn't dependent on some large corporation continuing to exist.

Truly embarrassing and insanely frustrating seeing recently fired journalists discussing Substack as a lifeboat. Presumably one of the podcasts you shouldn't have started has a promo code for Squarespace, where you can start your own fucking website very affordably?

News that people are interested in reading does not need to be prefaced with "Scoop:" -- it just stands up on its own as news. The "Scoop:" framing is a symptom of there being WAY TOO MUCH "content" (because of the internet) and few space limitations (because of the internet).
Ben Gilbert@RealBenGilbert

@JStein_WaPo A good way to tell something isn't a "scoop" of any importance whatsoever is when the headline starts "Scoop:"

That layoff email you just got is the best sign yet to go start your own thing instead of working for yet another Big Media Company that doesn't give a single fuck about you or your work.

Dylan Byers embodies the worst of Washington journalism. Astoundingly naive of the narratives of the powerful in exchange for vapid and largely immaterial “scoops.” A precise inverting of the highest callings of the profession
Dylan Byers@DylanByers

Scoop: The Washington Post will announce its highly anticipated layoffs *tomorrow.* As we've reported, WaPo is expected to cut *hundreds* of jobs and eliminate sections, instead focusing on core areas like politics & nat'l security. Jan. 26: puck.news/why-the-washin… @PuckNews

I am only here to share important information. For instance, the song "Girl, So Confusing" by Charli XCX has a killer remix with Lorde and it's the best Charli song. HEADS UP.
