This occurred on 8 April 2026 (with effect from 1 April), as confirmed by the university and official announcements. Charlotte Maxeke was born on this day in 1871 to John and Anna (née Manci) Mannya. Today marks the 155th anniversary of her birth. Maxeke was present at the founding of the ANC but was never its member because the ANC did not extend membership to women until 1943, which was 4 years after her death in 1939. But that very extension of membership to women was the fruit of her relentless engagements with the organisation individually and through the Bantu Women’s League, the organisation she founded in 1918 5 years after she led the 1913 women’s anti-pass campaign.

Though she was the only woman present at the founding of the ANC, she was NOT a founder member of the ANC. The ANC started off on a sexist note that was to only be corrected in 1943 when membership was extended to women. This was under Dr Xuma whose wife Madie Hall Xuma led the Women’s Section before it rebranded to the ANC WL under the leadership of the Ida Mntwana.
