What @RepOgles said is not an attack on the First Amendment. What Representative Ogles said is actually more in line with the historical interpretation of the First Amendment at the Founding of our great nation. When the United States was founded, most of the states had established churches. Most of the states had blasphemy laws, even into the 20th Century. Most of the states had Sabbath laws. Most of the states required you to be a PROTESTANT CHRISTIAN in order to hold public office up until approximately 50-60 years ago. The First Amendment, as originally written and understood, only restricted the federal government and it was only seen to keep the federal government out of doctrinal disputes so that the states could develop their preferred version of Christianity. For most our history, the civil magistrates promoted Christianity as the one true religion, and that was a good thing. Sure, there was a limited toleration of other faiths, but the Founding Fathers would agree with Representative Ogles on this issue. It was not until 1947 with the Everson decision that the Establishment Clause was applied to the states and our misguided jurisprudence on the First Amendment began. (I have an article on this subject linked below). Under the original interpretation of the First Amendment, Islam would not have been tolerated, especially in its radical form. Islam has no place in our society. It has been a threat to the West for over a thousand years.
