Methi for Rs 10 is the cope Indians feed themselves to avoid confronting reality.
A 2BHK in Andheri costs Rs 1.8 crore for 600 sqft of carpet with crumbling walls and no parking. Same money gets you a proper house in mid-sized US cities. iPhone 17 Pro costs Rs 1.35 lakh here vs $1,099 (around Rs 1.02 lakh) in the US. Same model cars cost 30-50% more after GST and registration. A decent 5-star hotel room in Mumbai starts at Rs 15,000-25,000 a night, on par with international rates, except the city outside has open sewage.
And you're paying extra for basics that come free elsewhere. You buy an RO system because the tap water isn't fit for washing vegetables, let alone drinking. You buy an inverter because the grid can't hold up. You buy bottled water, air purifiers, diesel generators, all just to reach the baseline quality of life that comes standard in most developed countries.
The food is cheaper, sure, but you're gambling every time you eat or even when you buy medicines. Detergent in milk, lead chromate in turmeric, refined oil passed off as paneer, industrial antifreeze in children's cough syrup that killed 20+ kids in MP last year. Americans pay more for groceries but at least their toddler won't die from a bottle of cough syrup.
India is cheap for sabzi and mazdoori. For anything that an urban salaried professional actually needs to live a decent life, it's one of the most expensive countries on earth relative to what you earn.
