I'm packing to go to #SanFrancisco this week to take on the notoriously steep streets. The last time I was there was 12 years ago back in 2013. I'm looking forward to competing with my younger self.
Here are the works I managed back then. It was an exciting time; Karen and I had just got married, we were skint and we funded this 2 month painting trip across America with a Kickstarter project. After San Francisco we drove to the Big Sur, Napa Valley, Yosemite and Vegas before flying over to NYC for another month's painting.
As I say , I'm chomping at the bit to see what I can do with those streets now though. Wish me luck 🤞🏼

'Kink'
50x40cm, Oil on Board
These are lovely terraces built for Minton factory workers so they all have gorgeous floor tiles on entry.

'Fire Escape'
Back in #Manchester! A tad clean and gentrified for my usual tastes but a beautiful fire escape, lights and cobbles on Little David Street.

'By Pass'
A day spent in the noise of fast-moving traffic
I'm excited by this subject of old communities sliced through by an A road. A good first few sketches, more to come...

'Beverley Hills'
I'm still playing with mixing the Californian landscapes of Wayne Thiebaud with grim northern England. This is Beverley Drive in Bentilee, the biggest council house estate in Europe when it was built.
You would not believe the generosity of the Kurdish lady living next to where I was painting. She brought out 3 silver trays throughout the day, morning and afternoon coffee, and an amazing meal at lunch. 📷

'Blue Bin Day'
I'm still hunting out interesting steeped housing to exaggerate around the city despite the January painting-a-day challenge being finished. I was keen to tackle something other than terraces so headed into Bentilee, which was the biggest council estate in Europe when it was built.
There's more to explore here with the motif of the council house in slightly abstract paintings.

'Stellar Street'
The last one of the month, challenge complete! I've loved every minute. Thanks for joining me on the ride, all your feedback and suggestions, and congratulations to all the other artists who have completed the January painting-a-day challenge.

'Hills of Houses'
Enjoyed painting the winter sun on the rolling hills of council housing and terraces.

'Back Track'
Another day spent staring into potholes. Judging by chats with passers by I'm one of the few people really pleased with the potholes.

'Pothole'
Little exaggeration of angles in this piece, a day spent studying puddles on an unadopted road near to where I live.

'Killer Mile'
Back up to Mow Cop to have another go at those 25% gradients. I was keen to try and capture the big view over the Cheshire plain as well as looking up and down the slope. 180 degree panorama condensed into a tall rectangle.
Fresh baked brownies brought out from the house opposite 😋
