Co-Conspirator 1 👉🏻 Peter Daszak Co-Conspirator 2 👉🏻 Gerald Keusch Company #1 👉🏻 EcoHealth Alliance Senior NIAID Official 1 👉🏻 Anthony Fauci David Morens, a former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) employee, is facing indictment for his role in a scheme to evade Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests in connection with COVID-19 research grants. Morens is charged with conspiracy against the US; destruction, alteration, or falsification of records in federal investigations; concealment, removal, or mutilation of records; and aiding and abetting. Morens served as a senior advisor in NIAID’s Office of the Director from 2006 through 2022. As a senior advisor, Morens counseled Senior NIAID Official 1 and other senior-level NIAID staff on senior-level policies, developed recommendations and solutions for issues impacting the NIH, and wrote and edited manuscripts. Morens also provided guidance and expertise to senior staff members on epidemiological studies and issues related to infectious disease planning and management. Additionally, Morens gathered information from grantees and others in the scientific community to establish facts about the nature of COVID-19. This enabled Morens to understand NIH and NIAID’s historical activities in coronavirus research, assist in formulating policy and procedures, and brief Senior NIAID Official 1 so he could then relay information to POTUS, Congress, and the public. Morens, Co-Conspirator 1, Co-Conspirator 2, and others conspired during the COVID-19 pandemic to defraud and commit several offenses against the US after NIH terminated Co-Conspirator 1’s grant. NIH terminated the grant, Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence (bat coronavirus grant), based on allegations that COVID-19 emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China. NIAID awarded the grant to Company #1 and Co-Conspirator 1, who made a subaward to the WIV. Following the termination, Morens and Co-Conspirator 2 pledged to help Co-Conspirator 1 restore the termination of the bat coronavirus grant and counter the narrative that COVID-19 leaked from a lab. In anticipation that their communications would be requested through a FOIA Request, Morens, Co-Conspirator 1, and Co-Conspirator 2 agreed in writing to intentionally hide from public view their communications by corresponding using Morens’s personal Gmail account, rather than his official NIH email account. The conspirators used Morens’s personal Gmail account to exchange non-public NIH information; correspond about their efforts to influence NIH to fund Company #1; exchange edits to drafts of letters addressed to NIH leadership for Company #1 and Co-Conspirator 1; and “back-channel” information to Senior NIAID Official 1. Each of these matters fell within Morens’s role as senior advisor and constituted federal records that needed to be created, maintained, and exchanged on government systems. Additionally, Morens and Co-Conspirator 1 conspired to pay illegal gratuities. The indictment states that Co-Coconspirator 1 gifted Morens wine for his “behind-the-scenes shenanigans,” and arranged for its delivery to Morens’s residence in Maryland.  Morens then allegedly identified an official act that he could perform to “deserve” the gift, which was a scientific commentary in a prominent medical journal advocating that COVID-19 had natural origins. Co-Conspirator 1 suggested he would provide Morens with additional things of value, including meals at Michelin-starred restaurants in Paris, New York, and Washington, D.C. justice.gov/opa/pr/former-…

I'm sad to learn that J. Craig Venter, a key figure in modern genomics and an inveterate troublemaker, passed away. Craig was very important to the study of human genetics and the biotechnology industry. He also had an impact on my career. The pitch that led @michaelnoer to hire me at Forbes in 2000 was about Venter's company, Celera Genomics, and its work on the mouse genome. Seventeen years, later, Michael edited a cover story I wrote about Venter for Forbes.

"Morens allegedly suggested that he could author a paper in a prominent medical journal advocating that COVID-19 had natural origins. That paper...has Morens listed as the leading author. Keusch was a co-author...as was Jeffery Taubenberger, who currently serves...as the acting Director of NIAID. Taubenberger is also known for reviving the 1918 Spanish Flu from a dead body and being an avid supporter of gain-of-function research."
The HighWire@HighWireTalk

Read BEFORE the hearing at 2:30 PM! David Morens spent years as one of Anthony Fauci's most senior advisors at NIAID. This week the Department of Justice indicted him on five federal charges, including conspiracy against the United States, falsification of records, and concealment of federal documents. He faces up to 51 years in prison. The indictment lays out a deliberate operation. Morens used his personal Gmail to route government communications and evade FOIA requests, learned from an NIAID staffer how to make emails disappear before a FOIA search begins, and actively deleted records he did not want surfacing in the press. He co-authored a paper in a prominent medical journal arguing COVID-19 had natural origins, a paper the indictment suggests was part of a coordinated effort to suppress the lab leak theory. Peter Daszak gifted Morens wine for his "behind-the-scenes shenanigans." Two unnamed co-conspirators are believed to be Daszak and Gerald Keusch, who may be next. The indictment also references "Senior NIAID Official 1," who Morens briefed directly and who then communicated that information to the President, Congress, and the American public. That official has not been charged. The clock is ticking on the statute of limitations for other figures connected to this cover-up. This is the accountability this community has demanded for five years. The first indictment has landed. It likely will not be the last. @LawrenceGostin No. The origin of covid is actually the most interesting and important scientific question in infectious disease. The fact that no one in the field wants to discuss it speaks volumes.

Perhaps he did know all along. As the genome dropped, Baric wrote Daszak: ‘Looks like we found our highly variable SARS-like CoV!’ Daszak replied, ‘My thoughts exactly.’ It’s almost as if Baric immediately recognized SARS‑2 as the very pandemic virus he, WIV, and EcoHealth had postulated a couple of years earlier, but he had zero intention of toppling the house of cards himself. Better to sit back and wait for Uncle Sam to do it.

Senator Rand Paul@SenRandPaul

One question Ralph Baric has never answered satisfactorily is this: Why did he never inform pandemic leaders that his lab and Wuhan bat scientist Shi Zhengli had submitted a proposal to genetically engineer a coronavirus with a furin cleavage site two years before a pandemic caused by a coronavirus with a furin cleavage site erupted in Wuhan, China? Adding a furin cleavage site is a gain-of-function experiment and may be one of the reasons COVID-19 became able to infect humans! Baric’s withholding of this knowledge prevented scientists from realizing early on that COVID-19 was not a typical animal virus that often infects humans poorly, but was likely a coronavirus purposefully engineered to infect humans. Withholding knowledge of these proposed experiments allowed Fauci et al. to cover up his approval of NIH funding for gain-of-function experiments in Wuhan and to deceptively shift blame to the “wet market.” The cover-up would have been less successful had Ralph Baric revealed that scientists in Wuhan were seeking funding for these gain-of-function experiments. realclearinvestigations.com/articles/2026/…

Senior advisor to Anthony Fauci finally charged for concealing federal records following a criminal referral from former House COVID Subcommittee Chairman Brad Wenstrup. “I can either send stuff to Tony on his private Gmail [sic], or hand it to him at work or at his house,” Morens wrote in one April 21, 2021, email. “He is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble.”

EcoHealth Alliance President Peter Daszak may not have been effective at getting intel from his Wuhan partners about Covid's origin but he was skilled at "positive outreach to Democrats" to head off concerns about a lab leak origin of Covid and other high risk research.

David Morens’ indictment shows why, under Trump, it’s hard to disentangle political motives from actions in service of justice. He was grossly unethical. But this smacks of selective political prosecution, full of conspiracy theories and grievances about Covid origins.

I disagree. Finding Covid's origin is important for public trust. If we keep letting go of outbreaks of ambiguous origin, the public will rightly distrust scientists and gov. This will guarantee more challenges to scientific funding & reduced resilience in public health crises.

So far all of the LLMs and LLM-based platforms I've tested have readily given me dual use information on pathogens and in one case even enthusiastically encouraged a gain-of-function experiment that could cause a pandemic worse than Covid-19.
