Melbourne Rebels will disband following a shutdown from Rugby Australia after 14 seasons. Rugby Australia decided against a rescue plan for the club proposed by Leigh Clifford, former chairman of Qantas and chief exec of Rio Tinto. Rugby Australia cited the application did not demonstrate "sufficient financial viability". The Rebels currently sit seventh on the Super Rugby ladder, and are preparing for their first-ever finals appearance in what will now be their last season.

@Micklet4 @MelbourneRebels Absolutely disappointing, but if you were @RugbyAU & wanted the club to succeed you 1 would make sure people could buy tickets & plan to get there; 2 wouldn't sack staff & contract only to last game the week before promising season starts; 3 wouldn't spin info against the club
