Amazon doubling spend. Meta doubling spend. Atlassian redirecting investment into AI infrastructure. The companies firing the most workers are also hiring the most chips. Investors understand the signal. Meta stock rose 3% on the Reuters report of the planned cuts in March. Layoffs are bullish now because they prove the company believes its own AI productivity thesis enough to bet payroll on it. Cost-cutting during a downturn is the 2008 playbook. Cost-cutting during a boom, while doubling AI capex, is the 2026 playbook. The second group is the one that's winning.
