@Oldboatie Aww Emma. Makes me a bit emotional reading this. And thanks for your dedication in training a whole bunch of future CAMHS psychiatrists like me along the way! Good luck with all your plans ahead x

At 5pm yesterday I stopped being an NHS employee. Apart from 3 months off to pursue my rowing “career” it’s the first time since 1989. Spending today handing over my patients because got busy with emergencies on Monday (of course). Mixed feeling naturally but it was time.

Much discussion about benefits of outreach teams in mental health. And promises to “learn the lessons” from the Nottingham tragedy - a phrase that infuriates families. But the real question is why we unlearned past lessons & what this tells us about future safety. 🧵

She sat at the back and they said she was shy She led from the front and they hated her pride They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance They branded her loud then were shocked by her silence When she shared no ambition, they said it was sad So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad They told her they'd listen then covered their ears And gave her a hug whilst they laughed at her fears And she listened to all of it, thinking she should Be the girl they told her to be, best as she could But one day she asked what was best for herself Instead of trying to please everyone else So she walked to the forest and stood with the trees She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves And she spoke to the willow, the elm and the pine And she told them what she'd been told, time after time She told them she felt she was never enough She was either too little or far, far too much Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek Then she found a small clearing, surrounded by firs And she stopped and she heard what the trees said to her And she sat there for hours not wanting to leave For the forest said nothing, it just let her breathe ****** Becky Hemsley 2021

It has not escaped my attention with the Lucy Letby verdict and reporting that the consultants in the department repeatedly raised concerns about her and were warned by managers to stop complaining "or there would be consequences" for *them*! When will NHS execs learn?

Too often when we think about "organisational design", we rush into drawing new operating models & org charts. Yet there are multiple aspects we should think about first: the ideological, strategic and emotional components of redesign, not just the structural. Here's a brilliant resource list to help us think differently about org design from @EmRoseBaz: emrosebaz.medium.com/a-regenerative…. Graphic: @voinonen

WE DID IT!! 🎉🎉🎉 We are thrilled that the Neonatal Care (Leave and Pay) Bill reached royal assent today! Around 60,000 parents annually will benefit from up to 12 weeks’ leave and pay when their babies are born needing neonatal care.

I had to describe my AuDHD child's school masking to a psychologist yesterday and I came up with a pretty efficient analogy. At school she is beautiful origami. Everybody loves to look at the origami, and marvel at how pleasant it is, but nobody thinks about the complicated...1/4

Can someone please get me in touch with a psychiatrist who recently got CESR? I am hoping to arrange an online webinar on CESR in Psychiatry, & I need doctors with recent experience to explain.
