they learn the job and how to audit. But they lack the technical depth that SAICA gives you. Their accounting knowledge is very lacklustre & their knowledge of auditing standards is intrinsically linked to habits they learnt from team members and not to actual auditing standards

Although I agree to some extent having worked (in audit) with chartered accountants in both SA and the UK, I can safely say the job can teach you certain skills yes but those people do not know accounting at a level people do in SA.

Many things in finance can be taught, that's why in Europe and the States even history and English graduates become investment bankers.
