I believe there are an infinity of pocket universes where the entire contents are a Boltzmann brain pondering the complexities of Storekit 2 sandbox provisioning - without success.

The first pledge in the Hippocratic Oath is non-maleficence: "First, do no harm." Newly minted physicians think it's so obvious as not to bear mentioning. I mean, when would it ever come up? In the real world?

The Great Silence suggests that in the long run, human-grade intelligence may be evolutionarily unfit. Whether superintelligence bails us out, or just punctuates our equilibrium, is the great open question of our time.

I just tried to build trn on my Mac. Did you know that Larry Wall wrote a configuration script that would interview you and your box for 40 terminal-sized pages; and if at last it couldn't find a C compiler that would make trn on your system, it would try to write you a new compiler from scratch that would do the job? R.I.P.

Was recently in a room with some bright young interns and a medical CDSS powered by a knowledge graph and some public taxonomies. I opened my mouth to suggest a different way of building, connecting and traversing the graph; by the time I'd stopped talking one of these kids had it spun up and running. The resulting model took an HPI I'd recorded a couple weeks ago - nothing else, just symptoms - and correctly diagnosed new-onset Behcet disease, 96% probability, one-shot. (The team of docs I'd been working with had had to wait for the skin biopsy.) The future's here, folks, and it's actually kind of exciting. But don't expect it to wait for you.

9. U-turns are legal wherever there’s pavement. 10. If you're on the phone, all traffic laws are suspended. (Double suspension if you're yelling in Spanish, Creole, or heavily accented Brooklynese.)

Doing an extended stint (+12 months) in NYC changes you. The top tier dudes are not millionaires. They're billionaires. The top tier girls aren't the bottle service girls at your local club. They're A-list published models. Fake stuff becomes hilariously easy to spot afterwards, and immediately becomes off-putting and gross.

Evolution. If we could reverse engineer our own brains, we could reverse engineer our conspecifics' (other humans') brains. And then with that knowledge we could exploit others to meet our needs, so we would not have to expend energy of our own to do so. Except, then, to be fit, we'd have to defend against other humans trying to exploit our energy reserves to meet their needs. And they'd have to defend against us, meaning diminishing returns on our own hard-won knowledge of brains. It's not evolutionarily fit to understand your conspecifics down to the last atom, so evolution imposes a cap. If you see a way around what I've outlined here, I'd be curious to know what it looks like.

Why doesn’t the brain, the very thing doing the thinking, know how it works? You’d expect a system that complex to understand itself, like a company knowing its own org chart. But the brain, by default, is clueless about its own structure or how it works? Why?
