Mehdi’s entire 2024 shtick was less about treating genocide as a true red line and more about staking out a rhetorical position he could later point to as proof of moral distance. If you look back, his criticism was loud enough to register, but carefully contained in a way that didn’t meaningfully challenge the political ecosystem he operates within or the incentives that sustain it. But to be fair, that dynamic isn’t unique to him. It’s a familiar pattern for people across the liberal spectrum who benefit from a status quo they know is morally compromised: offer visible, forceful-sounding objections, but keep them safely within the bounds of consequence-free dissent. What this produces is a kind of moral bookkeeping. The goal becomes documenting personal moral opposition rather than materially opposing the thing itself, and in the end, the performance centers the individual’s conscience and future reputation, not the urgency or gravity of the injustice being criticized. It’s exactly the posture MLK warned about in Letter from Birmingham Jail, the “white moderate” who “…is more devoted to ‘order’ than to justice; who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice.”
