@MattRKay Many of the students I taught would say “don’t what Erica!” I taught them that. I don’t care what you do with others. I respect you and this is a way you can respect me. And I have them options for how to respond besides “what” that were acceptable.

That “What?” gets me.
Had to get my daughter off of that ASAP. (She picked it up somewhere last year.) Mostly because I didn’t want the elders in my family to think I was raising a brat. And def not take it to school.

What do you do when cultures collide? I call a student’s name. Student responds “what?” This is acceptable in his culture. It is highly disrespectful in mine. If you were me how would you respond after the immediate shock has subsided?

Excuse me while I cry for all the parents, including lead researcher Dr Carmel Harrington, who lived with guilt. And cry happy tears for parents in the future who will have access to screening and prevention. 😭
