Some personal/professional news: today is my last day at the IFS. There’s nowhere else I’d rather have spent the last nine years and leaving is such a wrench. But it’s time for something new, and I’m excited to be joining The Observer as Economics Editor from 7 April.

Speedy analysis from @jrf_uk. This is how modelled household incomes evolve over the Parliament after deducting housing costs. It's a disappointing picture. Let's hope the Government beat the forecasts, although the headwinds from the current conflict shouldn't be underestimated.

🔔New analysis alert! Our modelling finds that average annual household disposable incomes are projected to grow by just £40 over the course of the current parliament (from April 2024 to April 2029) after adjusting for inflation.

Following #UKPoverty2026 more warning signs flashing. As well as describing problem of insufficient income from work, the Minimum Income Standard helps the solution as the key data source for the Real Living Wage @LivingWageUK. Even with falling inflation, costs continue to bite.

This is an important chart - the orange block isn't real growth - it's people moving from other (now obsolete) benefits. The true growth (blue) is much smaller and isn't that surprising given growth in unemployment.

@SarahSpoorUK @IainKPorter @jrf_uk Hi Sarah, we base this calculation on actual recorded spend on clothing according to an official ONS survey. Across the whole of the income distribution, couples only spend 1.6 times that of singles. I think it will be a matter of choices to spend money on other activities.

MPs will soon debate the annual benefits ‘Uprating Order' on how much benefits rise this year. But shockingly, support has never been set according to any logical calculation, like ensuring Universal Credit covers life's essentials - which @jrf_uk estimates cost £120 a week🧵1/4

🏴 Poverty levels in Wales are some of the highest anywhere in the UK, with almost 1 in 3 children growing up in poverty.
This unacceptable situation cannot persist and the next Welsh Government have both an opportunity and a duty to change this. 🔽

One of the highlights of this and previous years' reports was working with the Grassroots Poverty Action Group. It's important to hear real stories and struggles, and not just reduce this to a commentary on statistics, up or down. Policies and decisions have real impacts!
