A lot of Superman fans are really attached to the idea that the way to make Superman human is to have him be a 30 year old who's never experienced any hardship beyond a mild inconvenience, but that just makes any "hope" feel shallow to me

@ZealousSeraphim for me, it aligns with my belief on how superheroes should give away their powers. It's one of the few stories that actually shows the protagonist willfully giving up their own powers, sacrificing their pride.

The reason why adore FMAB is simply because it aligns with my own beliefs on power. I have no interest whatsoever when people powerscale/plotscale. For me, my love for FMAB is hinged on Ed's decision to forego alchemy. "The best thing we can do about power is to give it away."

The relatability comes when you realize that the government structure in FMA is literally the IRL government structure minus the aura.
And that like the main characters, we’re trying to find meaning in this messed up world.
That’s how we relate to FMA. In my opinion.

I see some people’s gripe with FMA seems to be that they can’t connect with the characters.
I can agree that the characters are less relatable than your average series. But I don’t think Arakawa was going for relatable personalities.

But what makes this stand out is that instead of having his friends give him the strength to continue fighting, it's the thought of his friends that gave him the strength to GIVE UP.

This has always been one of my gripes with the many stories written under the superhero genre.
For Ed to let go of the one thing he once thought "made him better than everyone" is the greatest thing he has ever done.
It's a middle finger to the accumulation of power.
