Some interesting facts from yesterdays ‘Irish News’ Irish symbols article you may not know: 🇮🇪 The Irish Tricolour emerged in 1830, not 1848. 🇮🇪 It was first a symbol of Repeal, or Home Rule, getting its Republican links after 1848. 🇮🇪 Vital adoption by secret societies from 1870 secured its later status ☘️ St Patrick’s Day was an established feast day as far back as the 8th century ☘️ The first ever St Patrick’s day parade was recorded in Florida, 1601 ☘️ He was first linked to Green in 1597. ☘️ The shamrock link to St Patrick is 1st recorded in the late 1600’s, but it was linked to Ireland a century before with much older roots 🪉 The harp is Irelands oldest ongoing symbol, attested in Irish myths set 2500 years ago 🪉 Every Gaelic King sponsored a harpist family, who could take 14-20 years to be fully trained 🪉 The symbol first represented Ireland in 1260, French heralds putting the harp on Azure 🪉 It was placed on green in 1642, both now retained, azure the Presidents flag, green the Irish Navy & also enjoying popular public use 🔵 The notion of ‘St Patrick’s Blue’ is a fabrication, there is no such thing. He was linked to green for 2 centuries before its improper invention. 🌀The tri-spiral of Newgrange is Irelands first symbol, carved 5200 years ago Full article here: All facts in book, ‘The Irish Tricolour’: irishnews.com/life/the-real-…
