One of the most common pieces of advice for getting better in FPS games from pros, is to load up a custom game and just run around the map, explore, learn jumps, movement, etc. Marathon fans getting mad at this are crazy, you're eating your own, the guy said nothing negative here
Jake Parker, M.Ed@JakeParkerLIVE

Idea for @MarathonTheGame: Exploration mode. Separated map instance for all maps in the game. Players who load in spawn with no gear. No enemies. No loot. No combat. No access to secrets. 30:00 minute timer. No rewards or XP. Players can freely explore the map to learn its layout before exfilling at any time.

@Tedd_zero Yeah, but in Dark Souls I'm not getting sniped by someone with a walk hack scope from 3 miles away.

@DSR_Joker Building the mindset is the key; "Death is the first step". Dark Souls had "Prepare to die" way back in the day in its marketing too.

@DSR_Joker Well yeah, because that's a real place with real fighting lol, not quite the same stakes here. You can do all the prep in the world, all the labbing and theory, but all of that gets tested in practical and most of the time you will just fail anyway.

@DSR_Joker Also, I'm not pushing this from an ego perspective. I don't care if it happens or doesn't. I'm not a 'git gud' purist.

@DSR_Joker Knowledge is gained through repetition, through success AND failure. A huge reason people don't even try content that's harder is purely because of that fear of failure feeling. I don't know if I can agree with the safety blanket in every experience now that I'm past it.

@DSR_Joker But it's also not the intended way to play. I mean we both can cite examples that allow you to play solo, hell we both play a game that allows for all methods unintended AND intended! But I'll still tell you it's not the way to go.

@Tedd_zero You can say the same thing for raids, dungeon, any PvP game ever, and yet do it on your own, solo homework with empty maps or AI companions is often cited as one of the best ways to learn.

@DSR_Joker I'm not saying Marathon is some massive revolutionary game. I've played Cryo; it's a risky experiment that I think will pay off over time, but it's no VoG like some were hoping it to be. But there is no one else doing something like this to this extent.

@DSR_Joker That's the problem; we have an 'idea', but not the full picture. We have a spectator's perspective, playing guessing games at speculative value and treating it as spoken gospel. And while we're good at pattern recognition, sometimes that's all it is.

Do you want a meaningful endgame that certain people will choose to overcome, and therefore make the difficulty of it lucrative for ambitious players? A genuine goal to achieve? Or another unambitious strike map that becomes routine? You cant have both without losing something.
Paul Tassi@PaulTassi

to clarify, I think that the concept of the content is good and pretty wild, but is it good in terms of drawing players to the game or engaging 95% of the existing base? Ehhhh

@DSR_Joker Building for mass appeal is not a guarantee. A large reason why D2 even survived its worst updates is because people stuck around despite how bad it got. Even Epic pivoted to a publisher role because they know their success is on generational borrowed time.

@DSR_Joker This talk of player retention and mass appeal is hedged on the speculation that any of us know what's been said internally about bungie and it's fate. It sounds like business talk, where nothing matters but the line, and I can't agree that games can only exist on that alone.

@DYorgy I mean prefer the capes being single pieces because you can paint them much more easily.

The capes being a single piece is a choice. Sub-assemble seems to be the rule of the day with these ones

@Tedd_zero It tastes like you could you’re unstoppable.. that is until two WSTR blasts to the face humble you once again lmao. It’s a nice plus, but it won’t save you from bad decision making of course. I’ve unfortunately lost a few to some stupid plays

@Tedd_zero For sure, it rocks, and I seriously respect the intention and commitment Bungie’s clearly poured into Cryo. I’m looking to try and give it a go soon myself, armed with only the blue Volley Rifles in my vault and the occasional purple shield I come across😭
