Thank god all of this is just Capaldi's fever dream as he dies on the cold earthy ground in the Mondasian colony ship.

@ehfbshjs111 OK you are right here, I was misremembering that shot, but the rest of my points still stand. You can't say this is objectively better just because of the scale and the quality of the CGI, you have to take all visual aspects into account if you want to make an objective statement

@TheMindProbe2 But it isn't a straightforward shot, it then zooms in to show us the interior of the space station, it's quite dynamic and lively.

If you want to say something is objective then you need facts to substantiate it. Looking at this shot objectively, it's high res, wide screen, and has a realistic looking model. Those could all be reasons that someone might think it looks good. 1/

@TheMindProbe2 Objectively, on a technical level, TISC is better in this regard though like I said it was impressive for the time but it would look cheap if you did it today.

If other aspects of the visuals matter more to you then that's fine, but you can't say it's objectively better on that basis. 4/4

And the colours pretty dull, lacking in any real contrast. Now, in my opinion, lightning, contrast and framing are far more important for creating than good CGI and high definition, and by that metric, I think DMP is by far more superior. 3/

@m_a_kwesi I would never say that the classic era looks better than the modern era, or indeed that the modern era looks better. I will, however, say that Dalek's Masterplan looks a hell of a lot better than most of RTD2.

@TheMindProbe2 Perhaps but there’s no pretending the classic era looked better than the modern era. Let’s not be ridiculous, I could pull countless terrible shots from Classic Who

@JayExci It's not that the characters aren't framed nicely in the Space Babies shot, but the flat lighting means your eyes can just as easily be drawn to those test tube thingies, breaking the emotional connection and taking away from what the scene is trying to communicate.

@JayExci Yeah, like this shot. Nice framing, but the colours are incredibly muted and the lighting is flat. In the first shot, the contrast between the dark room and the sun draws our attention to the central window that frames the two characters we're connecting with in that scene.

@TheMindProbe2 It looks visually better, I'm not sure quite how to describe it but on a visual level it does.

@TheMindProbe2 In terms of the visuals themselves. The 60s shot is impressive for the time and is very clever how it was done but visually TISC is still objectively better.

@TheMindProbe2 I'd rather compare whole episodes instead of screenshots. And yes, they both look great.

@TheMindProbe2 That CGI shot from Interstellar Song Contest looks objectively better than the 60s effect shot. I will say the picture of 1 and Katarina does look better shot than the image from the S15 finale though.

@TheMindProbe2 You chose a terrible shot from RTD2 though, you can critique a lot of his era but it looked fantastic, as did Chibnall’s actually.

@TrilbeeReviews I would genuinely love some kind of documentary feature with this director on a future collection box set, because I really don't get it. I can't fathom why these decisions were made

Genuinely, why is the moment the Rani reveals herself/herselves to the Doctor shot in an extreme wide with all this dead space on the left? Fundamentally poor directoral choices here that suck all the life from the script and the actors, regardless of the size of the budget.

Speaking relatively and in the context of the time in which they were produced I've got to go with TDMP. The VFX in modern-Who are obviously better, but Douglas Camfield's direction feels so dynamic with an emphasis on the actors so the audience can better connect with them.

@TrilbeeReviews Even without looking at it relatively, I think the 60s direction is more visually pleasing and artistically valuable than much of the RTD2 era
