@ylecun The terms you may be looking for are known as "proximate" and "ultimate causes" in evolutionary biology.

We often hear: "evolution hardwires organisms with the objectives of survival and reproduction" But those are not objectives that are easily optimized through behavior. So evolution hardwires *surrogate* objectives whose optimization eventually leads to reproduction. Surrogate objectives for survival are only hardwired to the extent that they enable reproduction.
