Major announcement coming soon! #NPSL

From what I’m hearing: Austin FC are holding up the transfer of their top prospect Thomas Burchfield (‘09) to another MLS club. Burchfield announced he was leaving the club after the 24-25 season ended. The reasons for leaving include shifting their view on him completely from the top prospect in their academy to a backup GK once one GK coach exited and another entered. Living in Austin no longer being feasible was another reason. Since last season ended, Austin have asked for sums I’ve had described to me as unrealistic for a 16 year old GK with no pro experience (sums commensurate with that of a true first team player). They have also slow-walked negotiations with interested clubs, taking weeks at a time to respond to offers. Burchfield was on Austin’s most recent territory list released in February, so another MLS club would be required to compensate Austin for him to sign pro with them. Players cannot move academies if they’re on the territory list before eventual pro compensation is agreed between the clubs, so he’s without a club as things currently stand with the season having started already. Burchfield isn’t even from Austin. He’s from Las Vegas. Austin FC agreed to certain promises when he joined that haven’t been fulfilled, such as providing a home stay program. Living in Austin was no longer feasible for him and his family past last season. Yet, the club is holding onto his rights for now, and he can’t play soccer for an MLS academy until something changes.
