A white woman walked up to a group of Black women exercising at a public park in Raleigh, North Carolina and threatened to call the police. What she was completely unaware of was that Mae and her assistant had already received prior authorization from Parks and Recreation confirming the space was first come, first serve, a right afforded to every member of the public equally under the law, and one that this group of women had every right to exercise. Yet this is exactly the position Black women are constantly forced into, having to defend themselves, their space, and their rights, only to be labeled angry or aggressive for doing so. The provocation is never discussed. Only their response is.
