My dad died when I was 13 years and my mom quickly remarried a few years later, she married a good man and I have zero issues with him. My issue is what my mom does at family gatherings now. She has built this whole story about my childhood and she Performs it in front of his family like it's something she's proud of. The version she tells sounds warm and intentional, Like she was paying attention the whole time. But that truth is I was largely raised by myself, all alone. She was overwhelmed and checked out for most of it and I don't even hold that against her because life is complicated and people do their best. But her best and the story she's currently telling are two completely different things. We were at a family dinner recently and she told everyone about how she used to take me to weekend classes because she always made sure to nurture my interests. Those classes never existed. I stood there and nodded because eight people were looking at me waiting for confirmation and I didn't know what else to do in that moment. Afterward I quietly told her I didn't remember things that way, and warned her never to pull such stunts again. She cried and said I was rewriting history to hurt her. Then went ahead to call a family member to say I'd been cold to her lately. There has been no apology, not once. But somehow I'm the one doing the punishing. I'm just tired of being a prop in a performance about a childhood that never happened.
