The vines are like roadways, except chaotic, an unplanned labyrinth. We knew we were on the right vine at last when we encountered evidence of a small campsite. Etched into the vine was a name: Oanu. Oan’s pops! Etched also was an impression of a beetle.

I understand now. This beetle’s a bit of a legend amongst Oan’s people, like unicorns became legendary after they left Earth, or like the hidden species declared reminiscent of giant apes when they’re glimpsed by Humans every now and again.
