Beloved ʻāina moku—213 days on this magical island. The tectonic plates of my nomadic soul were rumbling for quite a while. 3yrs of COVID woes, + dreaming since '08...finally made it to this historic, culturally & ecologically imperative site, Midway Atoll/Kuaihelani/Pihemanu!

@PercyUlsamer i heard she only stuck around in '22 for a measly 3 days! just finished a nearly 8-month stint to carry out an important project i'd been involved w/for a few years..so gutted to leave that special place!

@adisasterpiece Enjoy Kuaihelani! I was there as volunteer in the spring/summer of '22 and unfortunately, didn't get to see Wisdom. However, I was the one that got to help band her grandchick! Glad to see she has found a new mate.

Moments I waited a decade & a half to experience…to spend time w/the oldest known wild bird in the world—Wisdom, the Laysan Albatross! To see her, at least 72yo, resuming pair bond activities w/a new beau, after losing her mate Akeakamai in '21, was such a meaningful treat! 🪶

Banded in '56, by legendary ornithologist Chandler Robbins (N American Breeding Bird Survey fame), she was already on a nest, & at least 5 years old. Since then, she has returned to her faithful nesting spot on Midway Atoll & had ±40 chicks, many of which now nest on Midway, too!
