@stankRat_ Even if plenty of people play it, they still shutter the studio because it’s not the Biggest Game Ever and they had secretly spent something like a half a billion dollars on development (2XKO).

Remember when AAA devs said to not view games like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Elden Ring as the new ‘baseline’ for the industry?
The baseline has moved.
We’ve been seeing more and more of these pseudo-indie studios pop up within the last several years: AAA director/dev moves to an “indie” project/start-up, hires/poaches other AAA creatives, investors go wild, game dies on launch.
Consumers aren’t buying it anymore. They don’t even want to play it when it’s free. Is this industry cooked?

It’s hard to properly convey everything that runs through my brain when I see something like this. Here’s the bullet points: - It’s not surprising - It was yet another live service shooter - It went out similar to Concord - Concord was $40, this was free - Another case of “from the developers of *insert popular game* comes a new studio and IP - It didn’t have a wildly unique art/character appeal - It was the “one last thing” moment at The Game Awards - It was not a bad game - Many were not only disinterested, but actively rooted for its failure for entertainment It would be easy to come to the conclusion that “no one wants this live service slop, so quit trying” but that isn’t true. - It’s not slop, it’s a well crafted game by a talented team - Many do want live service (Fortnite, Arc Raiders, Apex: Legends, Overwatch, Marvel Rivals) - It’s potentially far more profitable than any AAA single player game could ever be So what is the take away? Highguard was a familiar looking live service title that people assumed would fail right away. It had a bad spot at The Game Awards, people clowned on it and despite being a quality game, “good” is not enough anymore. Yet, live service games (even familiar ones like Arc and Marathon being Tarkov or Marvel Rivals being Overwatch) still have the potential and the appeal to really go places. The only thing I can say is, we’re nowhere near the end of seeing more games like this, it’s too profitable to not try, but it’s also the killing blow if every star doesn’t align. It just makes me sad. I’m a single player only gamer, so none of this appeals to me, but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t exist. There’s plenty for me to play and seeing failure brings me no joy.

@a_cheat Yeah don’t have expectations of a game that you paid for, actually working. It’s the customers fault things aren’t going right. They should have had preload, they have been working on this for 10 years. They mucked this up for sure. And people have the right to be pissed off

People have no idea how servers work and are just ddosing escape from tarkov by trying to connect every 10 seconds.
