Kelvin Sampson shares what separates good programs from great ones. It comes down to 3 things. "The best teams come from the coaching staffs that are the best demanders. There are certain non-negotiables." "We're not going to sit down and talk about this...This is the way it's done and we expect this effort." No debate. No negotiation. Just the standard. "And those eventually will be called standards. So - standards, accountability, and then we've raised our expectations." "Here's our expectations, and our expectation is probably a little bit higher than most people's. We don't talk about them." The standard is how you operate every day. "We practiced this morning at 6:00. Probably our best practice in the last 6 or 7 days. But that's because our standards are raising. Our kids are holding each other accountable now." Then he said the line that defines a great program: "That's when you know you've got a great program." When the players hold each other accountable not just the coaches. That's when you've built something real. The formula is: 1. Standards 2. Accountability 3. Raised Expectations. Due to slick roads and wintry weather conditions, Oakland-Craig will have a 10:00 late start on Monday, March 16th. There will be no AM preschool. Morning practices have been cancelled or postponed. O-C is still working with the NSAA regarding district speech details.

I texted a coach this morning and asked how the new job was going after about a month. His response was one I’ve heard many times… and lived myself: “Not bad. Some kids pushing back culture wise. Always worried about staff and numbers.” If you go into a program and start making the changes that need to be made, be ready for pushback. That’s normal. My advice to him: Water the good grass. Don’t let the weeds hold you hostage. Too many coaches start looking the other way because they want to keep players and coaches happy. They convince themselves they can slowly change the culture. It doesn’t work that way. Culture doesn’t drift in the right direction. It moves toward the standard you enforce. Stay strong to your principles. The right grass will grow. 🌱🏈 @fastnwide

Coaches challenge players to reach a level they didn’t think they could achieve. Kids aren’t coddled. Great cultures play with an edge, develop toughness and have a lot of love along the way.
