Genuine question, if Hamas is defeated/disappears tonight, who is going to get the IDF to leave Gaza, ever? Certainly not the US, EU, UN, Palestinian Authority, Arab world or Israeli left. That's how Israel's war is strengthening Hamas: portraying them as the last group capable of forcing Israel to leave Gaza. Netanyahu & his predecessor Naftali Bennet are both saying even if Hamas is gone today, the IDF would stay in Gaza for the "foreseeable future" (Israel's way of saying permanently). Settlements, ethnic cleansing, forcible transfers are all on the menu. Who's going to stop them? The EU is "completely irrelevant" (their own words). The US couldn't even bother stop Israel from invading Rafah & never did anything about the invasion, despite Biden naming it explicitly as his clearest reddest line. They've been condoning Israel's "presence" (military dictatorship) in the West Bank for decades, & are not batting an eye for the IDF's rampages throughout Jenin, Tulkarem...etc. Why would they act any differently for Gaza if Netanyahu says "we're not leaving"? That's why many Palestinians, including some of Hamas' most adherent opponents, now perceive Hamas to have the 2 only last cards capable of forcing Israel to leave Gaza: the hostage negotiations & Qassam combatants' guerilla warfare of attrition to make it costly for the IDF to stay in Gaza. Gazans can see they're on their own. No one in the "civilized world" would lift a finger to end the war, let alone get Israel to leave Gaza. This abandonment, betrayal & despair have always been some of the most powerful sources of Hamas' strength. Reversing this trend begins with offering Palestinians a genuine alternative path to basic dignified life. You can't kill an idea unless you replace it with a better one!
