Eén artikel en ineens lijkt de werkelijkheid anders te liggen Je leest zo’n stuk en denkt eerst nog, logisch, oorlog maakt kapot. Lucht, water, bodem, alles krijgt een klap. Maar ergens halverwege begint het te wringen. Want het verhaal klopt wel, maar het klopt niet volledig. En wat ontbreekt is geen detail, het is de kern. Iran verschijnt hier als slachtoffer van rook en vervuiling. Van zwarte regen, van giftige lucht. Dat is echt, dat gebeurt. Maar hoe zijn we hier gekomen? Wie schiet, wie dreigt, wie escaleert? Stilte. Alsof dit conflict spontaan uit de lucht is komen vallen. Geen woord over raketten op Israël. Geen context over aanvallen op scheepvaart. Geen serieuze duiding van de rol van Iran zelf in deze escalatie. Alles wat schuurt met het beeld van Iran als ontvanger van geweld, verdwijnt uit beeld. En dan krijg je dus een verhaal dat netjes leest, maar niet klopt. Het gekke is, zelfs binnen die milieulens is het selectief. Want als je echt om milieu geeft, waar is dan het nucleaire programma? Waar is het gesprek over uranium, over afval, over wat er gebeurt als daar iets misgaat? Straling stopt niet bij de grens. Maar dat past blijkbaar minder goed in dit verhaal. En dan komt het ongemakkelijke deel. De prioriteit voelt verschoven. Pagina’s vol over vervuiling, terwijl de realiteit van het regime zelf nauwelijks wordt aangeraakt. Executies, marteling, onderdrukking, het zit ergens ver weg in de achtergrond. Alsof het minder urgent is. Alsof rook zwaarder weegt dan mensenlevens. Niemand zegt dat hardop. Maar zo leest het wel. Dit is hoe framing werkt. Niet door te liegen, maar door weg te laten. Door één kant uit te vergroten en de rest stil te houden. En dan ontstaat er vanzelf een moreel beeld waarin de ene partij vooral schade ondergaat en de andere vooral schade veroorzaakt. Maar zo werkt de werkelijkheid niet. Dit soort stukken zijn niet per se kwaadaardig. Maar ze zijn wel gemakzuchtig. Ze kiezen één invalshoek en laten de rommelige, ongemakkelijke context liggen. Want die maakt het verhaal ingewikkeld. Minder lekker leesbaar misschien ook. Maar journalistiek is niet bedoeld om comfortabel te zijn. Dus blijft de vraag hangen, en die schuurt. Waarom wordt dit zo gebracht? Waarom dit verhaal, en niet het hele verhaal?
