also i will be real with you (as someone who loves originals) OC work is not profitable enough to cover the cost to attend these shows unless ur some mega big author
fan art is what pays the bills, but that doesn’t mean you can’t draw OCs (for my own table i do 25% OC and 75% FA)

USA artists pay for the table, airfare, hotel, shipping merch, helpers, etc. at least for me it’s been a minimum of $1.5k per out-of-state show. if someone is spending hundreds of dollars to be at an event, ofc it’s reasonable they’d want to earn enough to cover those expenses

i would love to see more USA cons do similar events to famine with manga ichiba. while they still have a main artist alley, manga ichiba is their low cost alley specifically for indie creators to share their doujin work (primarily for locals since it’s not feasible to travel in)

the cost of entry to table at a comic event in jp is much lower. table costs for vendors are priced by the day and affordable, book printing is cheaper, and most importantly transporting themselves and their merch to an event is more convenient bc of a high speed rail system

i’ve been seeing a lot of chatter about 🇯🇵 vs 🇺🇸 artist alleys.. imo a key factor in why they’re so different is rooted in how the USA lacks the public transit infrastructure + population density that japan has
