Postscript: Mabley mentored generations of comedians and is cited as a major influence by stars such as Whoopi Goldberg, Richard Pryor, Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy and Wanda Sykes. Goldberg also produced the 2013 HBO documentary Whoopi Goldberg Presents Moms Mabley.

The versatile Mabley had a Top 40 hit in 1969 and opened for Ike & Tina Turner in 1971, singing a tribute to Louis Armstrong. Her final major work was the starring role in the 1974 film Amazing Grace. She had a heart attack during filming and died from heart failure on May 23, 1975. /end

In 1962, Mabley became the first Black female comedian to headline Carnegie Hall. She also began to reach wider audiences through appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show, The Merv Griffin Show and Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In. She became widely known as the “Funniest Woman in the World.” /6

Mabley used her platform to comment on race relations and civil rights. Her routines also included jokes about her preference for handsome young men over “old washed-up geezers,” although she was known offstage for her elegant, often androgynous style, including wearing men’s suits. /5

Because of her maternal role with other comedians, Mabley adopted the name “Moms” in the 1950s. Her “Moms” character was a toothless, grandmotherly figure wearing a housedress and a floppy hat. This disarming persona allowed her to deliver sharp social satire and tackle “edgy” topics. /4

However, Mabley soon became successful on the “Chitlin’ Circuit.” She came out as a lesbian in 1921 and began dressing in androgynous clothes and performing “lesbian” stand-up routines. In 1939, she became the first female comedian to perform as a solo act at the Apollo Theater in Harlem. /3

Born Loretta Mary Aiken, her early life was marked by extreme hardship, poverty and trauma. She reportedly gave birth to two children resulting from rape before age 14. At her grandmother’s encouragement, she ran away at age 14 to join a traveling minstrel show, earning only meager wages. /2

For those of you on this platform, too young to remember the financial crisis of 2008 under Republican president George Bush, this is exactly what got us into that mess in the first place. They loosened mortgage regulations, people who couldnt afford homes were allowed to but them anyway, then when they couldnt pay, the banks repo’d them, creating one of the biggest financial crisis in history The banks went belly up. And then we all had to bail them out So I’m warning you all now, I know many don’t like to listen to the people who are older than you, but be fucking careful with this. Because those regulations were put in place under President Obama to protect people from this ever happening again.

Mortgage Cos were a joke never delving into the customer’s finances. Lost the homes & never recovered. Bad all around.

The administration is taking money from immigrant hopefuls from over 90 countries despite the fact that Trump's own xenophobic travel bans have made it so that those same people are "banned from receiving immigrant visas and immigrating permanently to the United States." Trump is having it both ways: taking the money he would get for allowing immigration while simultaneously blocking that immigration. "During testimony before the US Senate, I called it the largest fraud in the history of the US immigration system. In fact, it is likely the first $1 billion fraud—a theft of processing fees for services never rendered," wrote David J. Bier for Cato. But the corruption goes so much deeper... Rubio's State Department has issued internal rules that prohibit his staff from informing the migrants in question that they have no chance of success and their money is essentially being stolen. It's a systemic graft operation. “Cubans represent the largest group of affected applicants with nearly a million affected applications at a combined cost of $543 million. The second most common was Venezuelans, with 239,000 applications at a cost of $138 million,” Cato reports. Cato estimates that over 2 million immigrant applicants were affected by the travel bans and had their money taken when there no intention on the part of the administration of rendering the services in question. "The fees came primarily from applications for work permits and filings to adjust status to permanent residence or immigrant visas—the two ways in which people receive green cards to stay permanently in the United States," writes Bier. Congress must immediately investigate this blatant, rampant fraud and begin the long, difficult process of ensuring that every single victim is paid back with interest. These people came looking for a better life in the United States and were instead fleeced for what little money they had.
