@csuwildcat All this is interesting, and what TBD is doing is more nuanced than I realized. Thank you

@benjaminwright You and I may meet at a conference and use a freshly generated peerwise DID to connect, which keeps our activities segmented and 1:1 between us. This way you can 'keep the streams from crossing', as it were.

In some countries centralized entities and authoritarian governments already shutdown domains at will for whatever reason they choose (e.g. China), but I bet in the future some Western countries will do so over speech and behaviors that currently fall well within the US 1st Amd.

One more time, with feeling: the DNS/CA system is a significantly centralized identifier layer where entities lease you a domain for more $ than 30+% of the world's population can afford, that can be interdicted and rug pulled from you - not good for self-sovereign identifiers.

@brockm The concept of decentralized itself is too abstract. People don't want DID per se, especially if it involves excess ID effort and private key security. But they will want a lighter, easier "Web5 Persona" if it helps them do cool Web5 stuff.

The answer to all of these questions is why web3 is a mirage. It assumes that people think they *need* stakeholder rights, censorship resistance, and decentralization -- and this is the business model and customer acquisition strategy. I have an NFT of a bridge to sell you, too.

On average, people don't pay for abstract values. Some people do, but they're outliers. How many people scour stores for things that say "Made in USA"? How many people have closed their Instagram accounts because of their disdain for Facebook?

@justinrezvani @get_zion Don't call it DID. DID is too geeky, too political. Call it Web5 Persona. User can have multiple personas. Persona avoids the legal baggage of "ID," though a power-user persona can equate to an "ID". Entry-level persona can invest less in private key safety.

@get_zion Suppose user's spouse is more technically savvy than user. Then spouse steals user's private keys. (Happens with passwords all the time.) Is spouse now owner of user's identity? Most users lack skill to manage powerful private keys.

@lukebailiff There have already been quite a number of lawsuits in this area where American owners of websites have successfully sued unwelcome, aggressive visitors. The policy announcement by Department of Justice does not change much.

@benjaminwright Thanks for commenting. Am I hearing this probably won't be well defined until law suits take place?

@MarkBaggett This doesn't change the law. Under the law website owners can bring private lawsuits against unwelcome, aggressive pests. To make clear that pests are unwelcome and subject to suit, owners can post no-trespassing signs. Topic is nuanced.
