I think a few countries that are currently in a well-managed yet inevitable decline could use a radical change in power. The reason why US politics are so wild and dirty is because more is done in the open, so you see it. Imagine what the appointment of Christine Lagarde to the ECB would have looked like if state media didn't have such a market share and the relevant communication was under the Freedom of Information Act.

I first started paying attention to politics in the 90's. From the enlightenment until about 2005 or so "liberalism" had a pretty constant meaning. If you are doing some soul searching because people, especially men and young people, left the 'liberal' party and your preferred candidate did not win, please consider the possibility that those that left are still liberal, but the party no longer is. I let ai write a list of classical liberal values, if you share them you are probably politically liberal and if not then we disagree, but we can agree to disagree and we can still be friends, im liberal after all. Individual Liberty: Classical liberals believe in the protection of individual rights and freedoms, including freedom of speech, religion, association, and property. The individual is seen as the fundamental unit of society, with the state existing to serve the individual, not the other way around. Limited Government: There's an advocacy for a government with limited power, one that primarily exists to protect individuals' rights and provide public goods that the market cannot efficiently provide on its own. Classical liberals argue for checks and balances to prevent government overreach. Rule of Law: This principle ensures that everyone, including government officials, is subject to the law, which should be clear, predictable, and applied equally to all. Free Markets: Classical liberalism supports economic freedom, which includes free trade, minimal regulation, and the ability for individuals to engage in economic activities based on mutual consent. The belief is that free markets lead to prosperity and innovation. Private Property: The right to own property is fundamental, as it's considered an extension of the self and a basis for personal freedom and economic transactions. Toleration and Pluralism: There's a strong emphasis on tolerance of differing viewpoints and lifestyles, promoting a society where individuals can pursue their own conception of the good life, provided they do not infringe on the rights of others. Secularism: While not necessarily anti-religious, classical liberalism often supports a separation of church and state to ensure religious freedom and prevent any one religion from dominating political life.

If you are disillusioned by @TheAtlantic's one sided coverage of the war in Gaza/Lebanon, but otherwise enjoy long form journalism, what do you subscribe to? The guardian?

@odinthenerd After watching the election, the one thing the US needs most is a proportional election system where your "third candidate" votes are not ignored. These violent flips of power even though only 10% of votes changed is weird. Also approval voting for president would be great.

@odinthenerd The republican party transformed itself drastically from Reason via Sarah Palin to Trump. I'm pretty sure Reagan would be cancelled now by his party just as Romney and Cheney were. You have to follow the cult of personality or you're out.

@GabrielKerneis @blitzclone Contrast by @EdgelessSystems (built with Kata Containers) works like that. The launch measurements for the firmware and kernel+initrd+cmdline are calculated ahead of time. The kernel command line contains arguments to mount a dm-verity protected disk. Everything's attested :)

@13erbse @GabrielKerneis Yes that's why. It feels like running a Linux VM and an SGX enclave inside it.

@blitzclone @GabrielKerneis How so? The L1 VM, including CloudHypervisor, is not running inside a confidential environment and isn't part of the TCB.
