People who try to make things felonies need to grow up. Criminal law is authoritarian, childish & vindictive. Support only tort law, norms, & reputation mechanisms like a decent, mature, sensible person.

Taxes in the US on W-2 income are much easier & simpler than taxes on other sources of income. In this way, the state raises the transaction costs associated with workers striking out on their own & contracting with others. This increases firm sizes & promotes wage labor.

Taxation is extortion.
