FOUR (4) AIRPORT FOLLOW-HOME SUSPECTS FATALLY WOUNDED IN SHOOTOUT A coordinated operation led to the disruption of a suspected airport follow-home robbery syndicate, resulting in a shootout in which four suspects were fatally wounded and one arrested. The operation involved members from SAPS Counter Intelligence Investigation Head Office, SAPS Gauteng Tactical Response Team (TRT), Gauteng Traffic Police Airwing, CAP Specialised Operations, and Tracker Connect. Intelligence was received, analysed, and operationalised regarding a group of suspects linked to follow-home armed robberies targeting victims from the airport. According to the information, the suspects were armed and travelling in a Suzuki Swift, along with an additional vehicle, which were allegedly used in the commission of the crimes. The multidisciplinary team traced the suspects to the Bruma Lake area, where the vehicles, fitted with false registration plates, were spotted travelling towards Yeoville while following a potential victim from the airport. Law enforcement officers attempted to intercept the suspects in an effort to prevent a robbery. This led to a high-speed chase, which escalated into a shootout. The Suzuki Swift eventually came to a stop, and suspects reportedly exited the vehicle while continuing to fire at the officers. During the exchange, four suspects were fatally wounded, while one sustained injuries and was subsequently arrested. Three unlicensed firearms along with ammunition were recovered at the scene. Preliminary investigations have further linked the suspects and the vehicle to a previous armed robbery incident in Rosebank earlier this month, where victims were also followed from the airport.
