Busega Mpigi Road Cost DOUBLES to Shs1.2 TRILLION! Parliament sounds the alarm over the Busega Mpigi Expressway's ballooning cost, jumping from Shs547.5 billion to over Shs1.2 trillion with minimal progress. The Physical Infrastructure Committee, led by Dan Kimosho, grills Works Minister Edward Katumba Wamala over unexplained cost variations. “This is science, not gambling… there is a smelling rat,” Kimosho says. The government blames design changes, new interchanges, and revised alignments, but MPs are unconvinced.The project’s delayed, with funding approved but no full contract signed. The contractor’s Shs578 billion claim was negotiated down to Shs78 billion. Lawmakers slam the delays and warn taxpayers will pay. The 23.7km highway, partly funded by the African Development Bank, aimed to ease Kampala-Masaka Road traffic. Now it’s a multi-trillion shilling controversy.MPs demand the original contract as probes continue.
