Bernie Sanders criticized the Trump family on Thursday over reported profits tied to cryptocurrency and other business deals, calling it “unprecedented kleptocracy.” Sanders pointed to a New Yorker report estimating that President Donald Trump and his family have gained about $4.05 billion through crypto ventures, Persian Gulf deals, a Qatari jet deal, Mar-a-Lago events, Truth Social and other sources. Crypto made up the largest portion of the estimate. The report said the Trump family’s crypto-related gains rose to roughly $3.01 billion, up from a prior estimate of $2.36 billion in August 2025. Those gains were tied to ventures including American Bitcoin, World Liberty Financial and the Official Trump and Official Melania memecoins. World Liberty Financial has drawn particular scrutiny because Trump’s sons are listed as co-founders, and disclosures show 75% of WLFI token sales flow directly to a Trump-linked entity. Sanders is not the only Democrat raising concerns. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has previously criticized the Trump family’s crypto ventures, calling them a “superhighway of crypto corruption.” She also urged Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to investigate Trump’s crypto-related activities. At last check, WLFI was trading slightly higher, while the TRUMP memecoin was also up modestly. American Bitcoin shares rose after hours following a lower close during Thursday’s regular session.
